⚠️ Hindi Typing Font Alert — Read Before Choosing

The official notification mentions “Mangal font” broadly, but based on actual exam-centre experience, Mangal Inscript is not available at the RRB NTPC CBTST. The system defaults to Remington GAIL layout when a candidate selects Mangal.

The Official Notification vs. Exam Reality

The official RRB NTPC CEN states that Hindi candidates must be familiar with KrutiDev or Mangal font. The notice mentions “Mangal font” broadly, but does not specify which keyboard layout the font runs on.

Based on actual exam-centre experience on TCS iON terminals, the standard Mangal Inscript layout is not available at the RRB NTPC CBTST. When a candidate selects Mangal at the exam centre, the system defaults entirely to the Remington GAIL layout.

⚠️ Mangal + Inscript is NOT available in RRB NTPC. Practicing Inscript for other exams (SSC CGL DEST, CPCT) will not prepare you for RRB NTPC — you will need Remington GAIL or KrutiDev at the actual exam centre.

Error Calculation Formula

The RRB NTPC error formula is identical for Graduate and UG. This three-step calculation determines net WPM after applying error penalties and the 5% buffer. Reproduced from the official RRB NTPC CBTST Instructions, CEN 05/2024.
1Total Mistakes

Full Mistakes + (Half Mistakes ÷ 2)

Full mistake = 1 point · Half mistake = 0.5 points

25 full + 10 half = 25.0 + 5.0 = 30.0 total mistake points

25% Buffer

5% × Total Words Typed

Mistakes forgiven before any penalty is applied

5% × 400 words = 20 mistakes forgiven free of charge

3Final Count

Total Mistakes − Buffer (minimum 0)

Result cannot go below zero

30.0 − 20 = 10 final mistakes to be penalised

4Net Speed

(Total Words − Final Count × 10) ÷ 10

Each final mistake deducts 10 words from total

(400 − 10 × 10) ÷ 10 = 300 ÷ 10 = 30 WPM — PASS

Full Mistakes (1 point each)

  • Wrong word substitution, word addition not in the passage, word omission, spelling error
  • Wrong word repetition (entire group counts as 1 mistake)

Half Mistakes (0.5 points each)

  • Spacing error, punctuation error, paragraph-spacing error
  • Wrong capitalization, word transposition, syllabification error, faulty Shift-key use

Worked Example (from the official notification) — 400 Words Typed

Total words typed in 10 minutes400 words
Final count of mistakes (after 5% buffer)10 final mistakes
Penalty applied10 × 10 = 100 words deducted
Net Speed(400 − 100) ÷ 10 = 30 WPM — PASS

Backspace and Editing Tools — What the Rule Means

Backspace, Delete, and arrow keys are completely disabled for the full 10-minute evaluation. Once a character is entered, it cannot be removed or changed by any method.

Disabled Keys — Cannot be used during evaluation

BackspaceDelete← Arrow→ Arrow↑ Arrow↓ ArrowEditing Tools

Official notification: “Use of editing tools for correcting the mistakes of the typed matter is not permitted.”

The system compares the full typed transcript against the source passage only after the 10-minute evaluation ends — there is no on-screen error feedback during the test. The practical implication: eliminate the correction habit entirely before exam day.

TypingWale locks Backspace in every RRB NTPC practice session from Day 1

The no-correction condition already feels normal by the time a student reaches the exam centre. Practice in the same environment you will face on exam day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the RRB NTPC Typing Test (CBTST)?

The Computer Based Typing Skill Test is a mandatory qualifying stage for clerical and accounts posts in RRB NTPC recruitment, conducted after CBT-2 for candidates shortlisted to typing-required posts. It is Pass/Fail only and does not contribute to the merit list.

Is the RRB NTPC typing test conducted by TCS?

Yes. The CBTST runs on the TCS iON platform, the same testing software RRBs use for the computer-based CBT-1 and CBT-2 stages.

What typing speed is required for RRB NTPC?

30 WPM (net) in English or 25 WPM (net) in Hindi, identical for both Graduate and UG levels. Net WPM is calculated after error deductions using the formula above.

Is backspace allowed in the RRB NTPC typing test?

No. Backspace, Delete, and arrow keys are all disabled for the full 10-minute evaluation. Once a character is typed, it cannot be corrected by any method.

Which Hindi font should I use — KrutiDev or Mangal?

Both are officially permitted, but Mangal runs on the Remington GAIL layout at the exam centre, not Inscript. See the font alert section above before choosing a font to practice on.

Is the RRB NTPC typing test the same for Graduate and UG?

The speed requirement, error formula, session structure, and backspace rule are identical. Only the eligible posts and pay level differ — see the comparison table above.

Are typing test marks added to the RRB NTPC merit list?

No. The CBTST is qualifying only. Final selection is based entirely on CBT-2 marks.

What is the minimum word count required in the typing test?

300 words in English or 250 words in Hindi within the 10-minute evaluation. Falling short disqualifies the transcript before the speed formula is applied.

Can I retype the passage if I finish before 10 minutes?

Yes. Restarting from the beginning immediately after finishing is allowed and is standard strategy — every extra word typed increases both the gross word count and the 5% error buffer.

Where can I read the official RRB NTPC CBTST rules?

The full official instructions are published at rrbcdg.gov.in and mirrored by individual regional RRBs, including RRB Thiruvananthapuram.
