What is Hindi typing?

Hindi typing means typing in Devanagari script on a standard keyboard using a defined layout. Two layouts dominate government exams:

Remington GAIL

The most common layout for Hindi government exams — used in CPCT, SSC CHSL, RRB NTPC, and most state PSC exams. Keys are arranged phonetically, making it intuitive to learn.

INSCRIPT

A standardized layout by BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards). Used in some state exams. Phonetically consistent across all Indian scripts.

How to learn Hindi typing

1

Know your exam's layout

Check which keyboard layout your exam requires. Most central government exams (SSC, RRB) require Remington GAIL. Download TypingWale and set your layout.

2

Learn the home row first

Start with the home row keys (ASDF JKL;). Practice placing your fingers without looking at the keyboard. This builds muscle memory.

3

Practice vowels and matras

Hindi has vowels (स्वर) and vowel signs / matras (मात्राएं). Matras attach to consonants. Practice them in isolation first, then in words.

4

Use the hint system

TypingWale's key hint system shows you which key to press for each character when you hover. Use it while learning — remove it once you're confident.

5

Practice with exam passages

Once you know the layout, switch to Exam Mode. Type actual passages from your exam syllabus — this builds exam-specific speed and accuracy.

Tips to improve your speed

  • Practice daily for at least 20–30 minutes. Consistency beats long sessions.

  • Focus on accuracy first — speed comes naturally once your fingers know the keys.

  • Don't look at the keyboard while typing. Touch-typing is the goal.

  • Learn conjuncts (संयुक्त अक्षर) separately — they have specific key combinations.

  • Use TypingWale's error breakdown to focus on your weak characters, not random practice.
