About the Mangal Inscript Layout for Marathi
BIS IS 16350 — the official standard
Inscript is the keyboard layout standardised by the Bureau of Indian Standards for Devanagari — the official Unicode standard for Marathi government typing. Type it and your text is clean Unicode, ready for any modern application or official submission.
Phonetic order — type as you speak
Inscript follows phonetic order: you type the consonant first, then the matra (ि is typed after the consonant), matching how the syllable actually sounds. Most beginners find this easier to pick up than typewriter layouts.
One layout, Hindi and Marathi both
The Devanagari Inscript key mapping is identical for Hindi and Marathi — Marathi-specific characters (like ॲ / ऱ) sit in the same layout. Learn it once and you can type both languages.
Mangal Inscript vs Remington — Inscript is Unicode/phonetic (GCC-TBC, Zilla Parishad, most Unicode posts); Remington is typewriter-style (the MPSC Group C skill test). If your exam is MPSC Group C, use the Remington Marathi typing test instead.
GCC-TBC Marathi Typing Exam — Speeds & Structure
GCC-TBC — the Government Certificate in Computer Typing Basic Course, issued by MSCE Pune (Maharashtra State Council of Examinations) — is the certificate most Maharashtra typist and clerk roles ask for, and it is typed on the Unicode / Mangal Inscript layout. What to expect:
Speed grades: 30 WPM (lower) or 40 WPM (higher) in Marathi, at 95% accuracy.
Speed passage: carries 40 marks of the exam.
Full paper: three sections — objective / theory (25 marks), practical (35 marks: letters, statements, formatting) and the speed passage (40 marks). You need at least 40% in each section; total duration is around 90 minutes, usually offline.
For the speed passage specifically, practise at your target grade (30 or 40 WPM) with a strict 95%-accuracy habit — the certificate is unforgiving on errors. Zilla Parishad and other Unicode data-entry posts also test on this same Inscript layout, so this one page covers a lot of Maharashtra exams.
Enabling Mangal Inscript on Windows
You don’t need to install anything extra — Inscript ships built into Windows. Add Marathi (or Hindi) from Time & Language → Language settings, and the Mangal Inscript keyboard is ready to use. Want to learn the full key layout properly? The complete Inscript keyboard chart and 36 structured lessons live on the Marathi Inscript tutor — this page is for testing your speed.
Your Score: Net WPM
Results use Net WPM — speed minus errors — the government-standard method. The full formula and a worked example sit on the Marathi typing test hub. For GCC-TBC, hold 95% accuracy at your grade’s WPM and you’re on track.
