Is the SSC CGL Typing Test in Hindi or English?
The SSC CGL DEST is in English only. There is no Hindi option. This is the single most misunderstood fact about the exam — confusion comes from mixing up CHSL (bilingual) rules with CGL (English-only) rules.
Why English only? From the official notification:
- The bilingual clause excludes the DEST. Objective questions are in English and Hindi — but Section-IV (DEST) is specifically left out.
- There is no medium option in the CGL form. Unlike CHSL, the CGL application has no typing-language field. With no way to opt for Hindi, the test defaults to English.
- The roles are English-based. CGL DEST posts handle English alphanumeric data systems (tax, customs, secretariat).
| Point | SSC CGL DEST | SSC CHSL Typing Test (LDC/JSA) |
|---|---|---|
| Language | English only | English or Hindi |
| Measured in | Key depressions per hour | Words per minute |
| Passage | Dense alphanumeric data | Normal prose |
| Duration | 15 minutes | 10 minutes (LDC/JSA) |
Speed and Passage Requirement
- Passage size: ≈2,000 key depressions (the text you must type in full)
- Time: 15 minutes fixed window — finish early → review, don't retype
- Speed: ≈8,000 KDPH (~27 WPM) — the pace that clears 2,000 depressions in time
- Language: English, standard QWERTY only
The DEST is not judged on WPM. What matters is completing the passage accurately within 15 minutes and staying inside your category's error limit.
Which Posts Require the DEST — and Which Are Strict?
The DEST is mandatory for every CGL post, but the accuracy bar is much higher for certain premium posts. Know which group your target post falls in:
General (wider error margin)
Most CGL posts where the DEST is only a baseline check. Wider error tolerance applies.
Higher standard (strict) — 5% UR error limit
Tax Assistant (CBDT & CBIC), UDC/SSA in Central Bureau of Narcotics, ASO (CSS/MEA/AFHQ), Inspector (Examiner/Preventive Officer/CGST & Central Excise), Executive Assistant in CBIC, Assistant in SFIO/GSI/IMD, and PA/SA in Department of Posts.
If you are aiming for a Tax Assistant or ASO-type post, treat the DEST as seriously as your written papers — the margin for error is very small.
Category-Wise Error Limits and How Errors Are Calculated
General posts
| Category | Max errors |
|---|---|
| Unreserved (UR) | 20% |
| OBC / EWS | 25% |
| SC / ST / PwBD | 30% |
Higher-standard posts (Tax Asst, ASO, Inspector…)
| Category | Max errors |
|---|---|
| Unreserved (UR) | 5% |
| OBC / EWS / SC / ST / ESM | 7% |
| PwBD (OH / HH / VH) | 10% |
Error types and worked example
Full mistakes (1 each): omission, wrong word, extra word, spelling error, repetition, incomplete word. Half mistakes (0.5 each): spacing, capitalisation, punctuation, transposition, manual paragraph spacing.
Example: 380 words typed, 12 full + 20 half mistakes. Total = 12 + 10 = 22 deductions. Error % = 22 ÷ 380 × 100 ≈ 5.79%. General post (UR 20%): passes. Tax Assistant post (UR 5%): fails — same performance, different outcome based on post standard.
On TypingWale you select your post type and category, and each mock is scored against your real cutoff to two decimal places — so you always know whether you would actually qualify, not just whether you typed "fast enough".

| "It is measured in WPM." | No — it is measured in key depressions per hour. |
| "It is qualifying, so I can relax." | No — failing removes you from selection despite high written marks. |

| Copy / paste / cut | Disabled | You cannot copy from the passage or paste into the box. |
| Spell-check / auto-correct | None | No software help — accuracy is entirely on you. |
| Retype after finishing | Not required | Finish early → review and correct; do not start over. |
Exemptions and Compensatory Time
- PwBD-OH exemption: Orthopedically Handicapped candidates may be exempted from the DEST by submitting the prescribed certificate from the competent Medical Authority (Civil Surgeon of a Government Health Care Institution) declaring them permanently unfit.
- Important limit: This exemption is NOT available for posts that require Computer Proficiency or a higher DEST standard — except the Tax Assistant in CBDT, for which the exemption is allowed. All other PwBD candidates must attempt the DEST.
- Compensatory time: PwBD/PwD candidates eligible for a scribe get an extra 5 minutes in the DEST. VH candidates who opted for a scribe in the written exam are provided a passage reader for the DEST.

- A passage of about 2,000 key depressions in 15 minutes, which is roughly 8,000 key depressions per hour (about 27 WPM).
- Is the SSC CGL DEST qualifying or does it add marks?
- It is qualifying and adds no marks to merit, but it is mandatory for all posts. If you fail it, you are removed from selection regardless of your written score.

- Is the SSC CGL DEST the same as the CHSL typing test?
- No. CGL uses a Data Entry Speed Test (key depressions, English only). CHSL LDC/JSA uses a WPM typing test that can be taken in English or Hindi.
- How is the DEST speed different from WPM?
- The DEST counts key depressions (every keystroke, including spaces and punctuation) rather than words, which makes scoring fair across passages with different word lengths.
