About the Kruti Dev 055 Font for Marathi

Legacy, non-Unicode font

Kruti Dev 055 is a non-Unicode “legacy” font — it maps Devanagari characters onto ASCII values rather than Unicode. It looks like Marathi on screen, but the underlying text is font-dependent, which is why it is slowly being replaced by Unicode / Mangal for official work.

Typewriter (Remington) key layout

Kruti Dev uses the Remington / typewriter key arrangement, so if you already type Remington Marathi, the finger positions feel familiar. The 055 variant specifically carries the Marathi character set (the Hindi variant is Kruti Dev 010).

Alt-codes for special characters

Some characters that aren’t on the standard keys are entered with Alt + numpad codes (for example, the Alt + 0161 range produces specific Devanagari characters). The widget’s Alt-code helper shows these as you go, so you don’t have to memorise them cold.

Kruti Dev 055 vs Mangal Inscript— Kruti Dev is non-Unicode / typewriter-style (older centres, legacy office work); Mangal Inscript is Unicode / phonetic and is what GCC-TBC and most current Maharashtra posts require. If your exam mentions “Unicode” or “Mangal,” use the Mangal Inscript Marathi typing test.

Where Kruti Dev 055 Is Still Used

Even as Maharashtra moves to Unicode, Kruti Dev 055 hasn’t disappeared. You’ll still meet it in older exam centres, some high court and district-level typing tests, and plenty of government and DTP offices where legacy documents were built in Kruti Dev. If your specific notification names Kruti Dev (or you’re preparing for a legacy centre), this is the right layout to practise — otherwise, confirm whether your exam has moved to Mangal Inscript before committing months to it.

The Non-Unicode Caveat

One practical thing to know: Kruti Dev text is not Unicode, so for any official submission that requires Unicode, the text has to be converted to Unicode afterwards. For exam practice this doesn’t matter — you’re tested on speed and accuracy on the layout — but it’s why we point most fresh aspirants toward Mangal Inscript unless their exam specifically wants Kruti Dev.

Alt Codes & Half Letters

Kruti Dev leans on Alt codes and specific key combinations for half letters (अर्धाक्षर) and conjuncts (jodakshar) — the parts that slow beginners down most. This page is for testing your speed; the full Kruti Dev 055 key chart, Alt-code reference and step-by-step lessons live on the Kruti Dev 055 Marathi tutor.
